Office Cleaning Frequency Guide: How Often Does Your Office Need Cleaning?
The right cleaning frequency for your office depends on how many people use it, how they use it, what kind of space it is, and what appearance standard you need to maintain. There is no universal answer. Here is how to think through it for a Washington or Dakota County, MN commercial facility.
Nightly Cleaning (5x Per Week)
Nightly cleaning is the appropriate choice when: you have 15 or more regular occupants, you have client or patient-facing traffic every business day, your restrooms serve more than 10 users daily, your breakroom or kitchen has daily high-volume use, or floor appearance is a client-facing concern that cannot wait until the next week.
Offices in Cottage Grove along the 80th Street and Highway 61 corridors that serve daily client traffic — dental practices, professional service offices, property management companies — typically need nightly cleaning. A reception area that sees 20 patients per day cannot be left until Monday to address Thursday and Friday's traffic.
Three Nights Per Week
A 3x/week schedule works well for offices with 6–14 occupants, moderate client traffic, and a single restroom or two single-occupancy restrooms. The restrooms are serviced every other day rather than nightly, which is acceptable for low-to-moderate use but inadequate for high-traffic facilities.
Professional offices in smaller Washington County communities — Afton, Saint Paul Park, Grey Cloud Island — often operate on this schedule, particularly for satellite offices or single-practitioner practices.
Weekly Cleaning
Weekly cleaning is appropriate for: small offices with 5 or fewer regular occupants, offices where staff work remotely most of the week, storage and administrative spaces with low foot traffic, or satellite offices that are only occupied 2–3 days per week.
Weekly-only cleaning is generally not appropriate for any space with a public-facing restroom used by clients or patients, regardless of size.
Periodic vs. Recurring: The Frequency Mistake to Avoid
Frequency decisions are often made for recurring tasks (nightly vs. 3x vs. weekly) without addressing periodic tasks separately. Carpet extraction, hard-floor stripping, refrigerator interior cleaning, and blind/sill dusting are periodic tasks that belong on a separate schedule — typically monthly, quarterly, or annually. They should be in your scope as explicit line items, not folded into the recurring rate and delivered inconsistently.
Minnesota Winter Adjustment
If your office has a hard-floor entry, the effective cleaning frequency for that specific area should increase from November through April. Even a weekly-cleaning office benefits from more frequent entry management during the salt season. Some clients add a monthly or bi-monthly entry zone scrub as a standalone service during winter without changing the overall cleaning frequency.
